50 runs to get in 30 balls with 3 wickets in hand.
Who would you want batting at the crease for Team India at such a juncture?

There are a couple of contenders for this role in the present time. One is the run machine Virat Kohli, and the other is the swashbuckling opener Rohit Sharma. These two could take India home from this position on most occasions. But since before there was Kohli or Sharma, there’s been one man who’s been successfully finishing matches for India. He’s affectionately called “Mahi” by many, and some like to call him M.S.D., but he’s universally called Captain Cool — none other than the cricketing genius that is Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The word ‘successful’ honestly falls way short of adequately capturing Dhoni’s achievements throughout his long and illustrious career which, despite some setbacks, has been going strong. Not for nothing is he considered the best finisher the cricket world has ever seen and counted as among the best captains to have led a cricket team.

He’s come in at crucial junctures for India time and time again for over a decade and helped the team get out of tricky, or even downright terrible, situations to win us games. So when you hear that a biopic on Dhoni is about to be released this year, you can’t help but wait for this MS Dhoni biopic with bated breath.
The excellent teaser, with its artfully shot scenes and the look of quiet determination on the face of Sushant Singh Rajput — the actor playing Dhoni in the film, has built anticipation for this most awaited of Bollywood movies.
If you haven’t watched the official teaser trailer for M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story yet, here it is:
As much as we’ve all watched Dhoni for over 12 years, and known and celebrated all his exploits on the cricket field, there’s a backstory to Dhoni that many of us still don’t know. And that’s the subject of this film.
The superstar Indian captain, batsman, and wicket-keeper Dhoni actually started quite humbly. He was raised in a one-bedroom apartment, which stood right adjacent to a sports ground. It’s this proximity that helped him get acquainted with sports at an early age. In school, he mostly played badminton and football. And as surprising as it may seem, it was his impressive goal keeping skills that helped him bag the role of a wicket keeper in a local cricket team. He began to impress everyone who saw him during that time with his phenomenal wicket keeping and batting, so much so that he became a regular in that team.
Then, when time came for Dhoni to look for jobs, he started to move about and happened to move to Kharagpur, West Bengal. The then-divisional railway manager of South Eastern Railways was in search of a wicket keeper batsman for his team at the time. Their paths happened to cross, and Dhoni got a job under him through the sports quota, and the manager found a more than able wicket keeper-batsman for his team. So impressed was he by Dhoni’s cricketing exploits that he even paid him a little higher than he did Dhoni’s teammates.
Dhoni’s journey continued to be remarkable after securing that job and finding a place in the regional cricket team. One of the many notable events from around that time saw him miss his flight due to a car breakdown on his way to the all-important Duleep Trophy, which he ended up unfortunately missing — a big opportunity lost. But during these trying times, he kept working hard and improving his game, before he was finally accepted in the Indian Cricket Team.

It’s this part of his life that will be under the spotlight in the film, and we’ll hopefully have plenty of remarkable things to learn about his life, both before and after the moment he joined the Indian cricket team. That’s the expectation anyway since it’s being marketed as an untold story.

The film is being directed by critically acclaimed director Neeraj Pandey and starring Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role. The excellent Dhoni movie cast comprises Kiara Advani, Anupam Kher, Fawad Khan, Ram Charan, Disha Patani, John Abraham, and Bhoomika Chawla, all of who play supporting roles in this film. It’s being produced by Fox Star Studios, and the official release date has been confirmed as September 2. In an ideal world, the date should’ve been 7 given Dhoni’s fascination with his lucky no. 7. But alas, that’s not to be.
For now though, the wait is on for the Dhoni movie trailer — after the release of a successful teaser — which will help us learn a lot more about what this film will entail. A TOI report put out some interesting facts about the film recently, but till the movie trailer comes out, we’ll just have to wait. One thing’s for sure, though. The wait will be worth it.
