Hollywood’s famous director-producer Ridley Scott, best known for his science-fiction film Blade Runner,
collaborated with the GoPro, Inc. for the filming of his latest release, The Martian.
The use of GoPro cameras in the production of the film represents the biggest cinematic integration of GoPro cameras in a Hollywood release, unlocking creative perspectives on what life on Mars would be like and drawing the viewer closer to the story.
As per a report, director Scott said:
“We used GoPro cameras in several of our biggest scenes in The Martian, and they really allowed us to capture not only the intensity and suspense of these moments, but also the intimacy of the characters themselves. New technologies like GoPro give filmmakers the opportunity to really push the language of cinema forward and introduce audiences to new perspectives and layers of storytelling that can really be quite engaging.”

“I ended up using these cameras in a way I didn’t expect. They became a character in the movie; they were mounted on the astronauts; Matt’s character actually records all of his video logs on them in the habitat. Small details that helped drive aspects of the story forward and gave the world an extra layer of authenticity and familiarity.”
Starring Matt Damon in the lead role of astronaut Mark Watney, the movie revolves around Watney’s attempts to survive on the Red Planet after he gets left behind by the Ares III crew after presumed to be lost and dead.
The film is an adaptation of Andy Weir’s science-fiction novel The Martian. It boasts of a highly illustrious star cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in supporting roles.
