At a time when the heads of states and representatives of 195 countries are trying to iron out a plan of action to deal with the problem of climate change, Chennai is bearing the brunt of a specific climactic shift over the Bay of Bengal.

A slow-moving depression over the southwest region of the bay in the Indian Ocean is causing a very heavy downpour in Chennai, Puducherry and surrounding regions in Tamil Nadu.

The city of Chennai was just recovering from the aftermath of heavy rains — caused due to a cyclonic storm in November – when another round of rains began to affect the region. The authorities say this is the heaviest downpour seen in over 100 years.

Recent estimates suggest that 188 people are dead, and many are injured and trying to reach out for help after being stranded in partly submerged areas. The army has, therefore, been deployed in at least a couple of suburban areas in the city to rescue people, while the Navy is on standby. More army personnel are likely to join the existing battalions in Chennai.

The constant focus on the Paris attacks and the crisis in the Middle-East has, unfortunately, eaten significantly into the attention that this crisis in Chennai deserves. As people reach out for help, it’s time for us to get together and help in any way possible.

Here’s the city’s plight, in pictures.
