Today, COP 21 — the 21st Conference of Parties — got underway in Paris, France. This could possibly be the last annual COP meeting, as negotiators had decided in 2011 that the final deal would be cemented this year.
Countries have been coming together annually for this particular UN event since the year 1992 in order to put in place a practical plan of action for dealing with climate change.
It remains to be seen whether COP 21 turns out to be fruitful in the context of climate change. The next couple of weeks will certainly tell.
The climate change situation, in the meanwhile, is not getting any better. The UN recently published a report stating that this year is likely to be the hottest year on record.
If the nations don’t quickly iron out a proper plan of action for dealing with climate change effectively, drastic changes are likely to occur everywhere across the globe in the future.
To put things into perspective, we created ten visual graphics documenting the terrible consequences of climate change if it remains unresolved.
But one thing’s for sure — we’ve come a long way from the times when most people thought the climate change problem was fake. We’ll certainly be making giant strides in the future.
