Everyone’s in search of happiness. But some people seem to be able to access it more easily than others. Turns out, their character traits put them in an advantageous position.

Of course, these traits aren’t limited to certain people. Anyone can develop these traits and gain an easier access to the well of happiness that surrounds us.

Curious to know what these traits are? Let’s take a look.

1. Gratitude

“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.”
– G.K. Chesterton

You haven’t made it this far all on your own. You’ve had people who’ve helped you every step of the way, be it friends and family or teachers and strangers. Knowing and acknowledging this fact without condition is a great source of happiness.

2. Patience

Patience and time do more than strength and passion.”
– Jean de la Fontaine

There’s incredible power in having the ability to sit back and go with the flow rather than try to push through life every step of the way. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go your way, but that’s when patience helps you stay collected.

3. Persistence

It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.
– Albert Einstein

We all have goals and dreams, and some of us set out to achieve them. But then, things get tougher and tougher along the way. During this phase, a tiny few march on ahead despite the difficulties, and eventually find success and happiness.

4. Self-esteem

“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”
– Mark Twain

People who accept and like who they are deep down tend to be happier in life. Several studies in the US, including some conducted at University of Michigan, have shown that satisfaction with self is the best predictor of general life satisfaction.

5. Integrity

Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.
– Marcus Aurelius

A person with a strong ethical core and a set of principles by which they abide may face many battles along the way, but eventually nothing can stop them from being satisfied and happy about their choices and their life in general.

6. Love

“There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved.”
– George Sand

Not just the strong aspect of romantic love, but love for all your near and dear ones, acquaintances, and strangers, goes a long way towards helping you lead a happier, more fulfilling life.

7. Forgiveness

“Without forgiveness, life is governed by… an endless cycle of resentment and retaliation.”
– Roberto Assagioli

Carrying the feelings of anger, resentment, or disappointment for another may seem justified to you, but it’s like a drink of poison that you drink while expecting the other to die. Forgiveness sets you free, and so is an integral part of being happy.

8. Optimism

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
― Winston S. Churchill

The rigors of everyday life are tough to bear every day. Optimism is an invaluable trait to possess in this state, as it lets you see the silver lining in even the hardest of life’s challenges and gives you the courage to smile even when it’s raining outside.
