Bollywood is a leader in movie making, surpassing Hollywood in the number of movies it churns out in a year. Here’s a meager list of big budget movies Bollywood has made thus far.
This bilingual epic historical fiction film was made on a budget of about 250 crore, which was spent on gravity defying stunts, bringing about 1000 horses from Rajasthan and custom made armour and jewelry. You know, just casually spendin’ all that cash money.
2. Dhoom 3
Basically everyone went for Katrina and watching her bring the big guns out in Kamli. But, Dhoom 3 was made on a whopping budget of 175 crore spent on expensive bikes, chase scenes and Malang, one among the most expensive songs shot in Bollywood.
This Rajnikanth starrer brought the house down with a budget of 150 crore, which was used to make about 57 costumes for female lead Aishwarya and suits of copper for Rajnikanth’s robotic version Chitti. When Rajnikanth comes, he makes sure the moolah is spent well.
4. Bang Bang
This remake of Hollywood movie Knight and Day was shot for 140 crore across Thailand, Greece, Prague and the States along with director Andy Armstrong, who made The Amazing Spiderman 2, for the stunts. Sure did make Hrithik and Katrina look stunning if nothing else.
This movie marked SRK’s debut as a superhero in a movie and was made for 125 crore owing to the VFX and costumes. We’re glad India got a sci-fi movie though.
6. Krrish 3
India found a superhero in Krrish thanks to Hrithik Roshan and 115 crore spent on VFX, costumes and Vivek Oberoi’s metal suit. We haven’t seen that suit or Oberoi ever since.
7. My Name is Khan
This movie marked SRK and Kajol’s return as a pair, SRK in a lead role after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and a whole bunch of political controversy. It was distributed by FOX Star Entertainment, which bought the rights to the film for 100 crore and made it the most expensive Bollywood movie in 2010.
8. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
This movie didn’t do too well on the box office but owing to being shot in and around New York city, it cost a bit at 74 crore. We’re kinda sorry to realize KANK didn’t really make it out.
Mexican actress Bárbara Mori and Hrithik Roshan definitely had some sizzling chemistry but 60 crore along with that couldn’t do much for the movie. We were just sad to see Mori go.
Drona featured Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra. It had special effects and it was shot in Prague, Namibia, Bikaner, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. And literally nobody remembers this movie or has any idea of what it was about. Oh, and it cost 22 crore.
It’s just sad to know that most of these big budget movies broke the bank but not the box office. Better luck next time Bollywood? I promise we still love you.
